Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases(STDs), once called venereal diseases or VD, are among the most common infectious diseases in this country today. They affect women of all backgrounds and economic levels, and, because many STDs have no symptoms, women often do not seek care until serious problems have developed. This can lead to more server health problems, such as cervical cancer, if the disease is not treated early. Here is an overview of the six most common diseases:

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS): Caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), AIDS is contracted through the exchange of bodily fluid. It is a virus that destroys the body's ability to fight off infection.

Chlamydia: The most common STD, chlamydia may cause abnormal genital discharge and burning with urination, but it often goes undetected.

Genital Herpes: Unlike other STDs, herpes - caused by the herpes simplex virus - has very noticeable and painful symptoms. Those infected have painful blisters or open sores in the genital area, which can reappear during "break outs."

Genital Warts: Caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), genital warts look much like common skin warts, only they appear around the genital area and anus.

Gonorrhea: Those suffering from gonorrhea experience vaginal discharge and painful or difficult urination.

Syphilis: This disease usually goes undetected entirely. Its symptoms are very mild and may disappear suddenly.
